Service modeling represents a sub-process of the service-oriented analysis phase. Modeling services refers to the process and technique of decomposing business process logic into a granular set of individually defined actions that are grouped and organized into preliminary service candidates. Some of the actions become the basis of service capability candidates and in subsequent parts of the service modeling process, service composition candidates are defined to ensure that the logic residing in service candidates can be effectively composed to automate the business process from which it was originally derived.

The modeling of business-centric service candidates (such as those based on task and entity service models) generally requires the involvement of both business analysts or business subject matter experts and technical architects. When collaboration is successful, repeated iterations of the service-oriented analysis and service modeling processes result in a higher quality service inventory blueprint.
